AOUC is back after 4 years! It is being held in the same city of Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei. However, this time, all games were held in sports stadiums. The biggest stadium would have to be the World Games stadium which could accommodate 55,000 spectators.

There are two divisions this time round: Open & Mixed Divisions. All teams are to play double round robin games and the top two placed teams will play each other in the finals, with the 3rd & 4th placed teams playing each other for the bronze medal.

Open Division:

This division saw 4 Countries fighting out namely; Japan, Chinese Taipei, Singapore & India.

Japan finished the group stages undefeated, winning all games by large margin.

Chinese Taipei finished the group stages winning all teams except for the two games against Japan.

Singapore finished the groups stages with a record of 2 wins & 4 losses.

India lost all games, having to forfeit the last 3 games due to the lack of players on the team (injury).

Finals

Japan played Chinese Taipei in the finals of the Open Division and raced to a comfortable lead at halftime. Japan, which is 80% made up of the mighty Buzz Bullets, played fluid Ultimate throughout the game. Chinese Taipei played hard and depended on accurate hucks to their receivers to keep themselves in the game. At the end of the day, Japan proved too strong for Chinese Taipei and Japan sealed the game 17 – 7.

Final Placing of AOUC Open Division 2011

Gold: Japan
Silver: Chinese Taipei
Bronze: Singapore
4th Place: India

Mixed Division:

Mixed Division saw 5 Countries fighting it out for the Championship: Japan, Chinese Taipei, Singapore, Australia & Hong Kong.

Japan finished the group stages undefeated, winning most games by large margin.

Australia finished the group stages winning 5 games & losing 3 games (2 to Japan & 1 to Chinese Taipei), winning Taiwan by total goal difference.

Chinese Taipei finished 3rd in the group stages winning 5 games & losing 3 games (2 to Japan & 1 to Australia), losing to Australia by total goal difference.

Singapore finished 4th the groups stages with a record of 2 wins (2 games against Hong Kong) & 6 losses.

Hong Kong finished 5th after losing all their group games.

Bronze Medal:

Singapore played Chinese Taipei in the Bronze medal game. Both teams had great flow throughout the game but Singapore failed to capitalize on their chances. Chinese Taipei took advantage and pulled away. Chinese Taipei eventually took the game 16 – 8.

Finals:

Japan played Australia in a rematch of 2007 AOUC Mixed finals. Japan raced to a lead early into the game and kept the lead all the way. Australia showed that they are no pushovers by having a few streaks in between. However, with the Japanese showing consistently in converting their O points and having a few break points, Japan won the Mixed Finals 18 – 11.

3 huge Cheers to the organizing committee and volunteers for putting up such a great tournament! This is a milestone for Asia Ultimate and hopefully, it will bring Asian Ultimate to greater heights!

Videos of the Mixed & Open Finals will be posted once we are done with the editing! We have a few random games as well! Bear with us for the moment for the backlog of videos! We have been traveling over a few tourneys with little time in between! Thank you!

Background Info: Started out in 2009, TPU was founded by Nicholas Raphael See and Benedict Chua. With only less than 20 people in the team initially, they did not give up on the team and continued trying to recruit as much people as possible, training and sending the team to small competitions to gain experience. And with most of them being Year 3s and graduating that very year, TPU had gone through hardships trying to hold the team together. Just last year, TPU just participated in their very first POL-ITE Ultimate Frisbee Tournament with a majority of juniors in the team. Although they came in last, but that does not mean the end of anything, but instead it instilled a mindset in all players to make a stronger comeback this very year. The team is currently led by Captain Constance and Vivian.

Analysis: TP is going into the tournament with a balanced squad of 1/2 seniors and 1/2 juniors, with 9 girls and 15 guys. Coached by experienced coach, Enrique Lee, TP will prove to be a bigger threat this year round. Game play with be built on fixed O and D line structure and thus, look out for familiarity within their lines. TP will look to improve on their previous position and spring some surprises!
