Team Preview: Nanyang Technological University (NTU)
New blood, New drive. NTU intends to make a comeback this SUniG!
Hosts NTU Ultimate will definitely extend every inch of their home ground advantage in their championship race this SUniG. Coming in 4th place last SUniG with no consolation definitely made the team hungry for some wins this weekend. With the recruitment of several young talents to the squad and the return of key senior players from exchange programmes this year, we may see a whole new team NTU. Captain Ryan Chin asserted, "Indeed we are seeing a lot of new faces in the squad this year, and the freshmen are taking up big important roles. But talent alone does not win games. The strength of a team lies in their ability to work together and complement each other on the field and I think we have a good mix." With their new lineup, NTU will definitely be one of the hot favourites this year.
Watch out for team NTU as they blaze the field with their new teamwork, athleticism and skill!
1. What is your team's biggest challenge coming into SUniG 2017?
Our biggest challenge coming into SUniG 2017 was to find the best way to fit all the individual talents together as a team, putting together their strengths and minimising their weaknesses. Since Ultimate Frisbee is a team sport, individual talents will only get us so far and working together as a team is the most important of all.
2. Which team is your biggest rival this year?
Our biggest rival would probably have to be SIM, looking at their team of all rounded players with many superstars. With majority of the team made up of experienced players, it would definitely be a really tough match up that we will be looking forward to. Other schools like NUS and SMU have their fair share of experienced players as well and we will definitely be looking out for them too.
3. There seems to be many new faces this year for NTU, how do you think this will change the team dynamics and how will these new players contribute to the team?
New faces bring about fresh new dynamics to the team, which is definitely beneficial if used effectively. With new blood, the NTU team looks a whole lot different compared to the previous years’, and they definitely bring about more flexibility in terms of gameplay with their individual skillsets.
4. If you have to nominate a Male and Female MVP on your team, who would that be?
The male MVP to look out for will probably be Darren, a really intense player with his longer than average arms always looking for hand blocks. A hardworking and intense player like him helps lead the team’s defence and stabilises the team’s offence, improving gameplay overall.
The female MVP to look out for will probably be Juliet, with her quick feet and agile movement, who provides the team with reliable options on the field. With her quick thinking, she is also able to provide versatility to the team in terms of adapting to the opponent’s game play.
5. What is the special traits of your team? (What sets you apart from the other schools?)
I think what sets NTU apart from the other schools is that the location of the campus is so isolated and majority of the team is living on campus and that helps to bring the team closer together. We do not only work hard on the fields, but we do play hard outside of training as well, hanging out with each other on campus.
6. And finally, what is the expected finish for SUniG 2017?
We will definitely work hard to try and make it to the finals of SUniG 2017, but we believe that the result we get will be a direct reflection of how hard we work. Therefore, we will definitely work hard and earn the position we deserve.
