Singapore University Game 2019

Yet another thrilling weekend at NTU fields, congratulations to Singapore Institute of Management, National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University in their podium finishes!

Fantastic performance from teams over the weekend with crazy athletic plays, great display of spirit of the game even when the competition is tight.

Every school displayed their unique attributes on and off the field. SMU vs SIT on day 1 showcased a use of quick decisive pull plays, putting their speedy mid cutters to great use to end the points fast. Day 2 commenced with an exciting first round of games between NTU and SMU with a heart pounding endzone play to end the universe point with a score of 9-8 to NTU. Round 2 if games commenced with SIT vs SUTD with a shockingly close scoreline of 9-7. Next came an "El Clásico" match between championship contenders SIM and NUS, with SIM taking an early break in the first half. NUS was resilient and tenacious in their defense coming back with a jarring 8-7 (To SIM) at time cap. A clinical offense from SIM closed the game with a score of 9-7.

Top 4 teams of the Singapore University Games 2019 will advance to the Institute-Varsity-Polytechnic Games (IVP Games) held in Jan 2020. Be sure to keep a lookout for our highlight videos from this SUniG '19 weekend to watch some of the action you may have missed!

Captain's Interview:

Singapore Institute of Technology

1. What is your team's biggest challenge coming into SUniG 2019?

The biggest challenge was to have everyone coming together to train consistently. Because of the different courses and faculties we’re in, there’s a great mix of us in school, at work, or having exchange overseas. This results in the team having lesser time to train together as a whole team.

2. Which team is your biggest rival this year?

Every team we meet on the field is our rival, and should not be underestimated. We shifted our mindset to play our best as a collective effort and this allows us to challenge all the teams we’re up against accordingly.

3. Was there anything different that you did as compared to last season?

Definitely. There are some new players in the team who brought in a different set of hard and soft skills, which helped to challenge us even further in our trainings. We had a change of coach this year. This meant that there are new changes in our approach for game play.

4. If you have to nominate a Male and Female MVP on your team, who would that be?

My team is valuable in each of their own ways. All of us give our best for the team in different ways, and we depend on one another to grow as an individual and player. 5. What is the unique differential of your team? (What sets you apart from the other schools?)      One thing would be, we are constantly improvising and adapting on our style of play as the competition progresses. We are not predictable, but we always have a set play to fall back on 6. And finally, what is the expected finish for SUniG 2019? (Position)     We would like to see ourselves getting at least a podium finish (3rd) this year.

Captain's Interview:
National Technological University

1. What is your team's biggest challenge coming into SUniG 2019?

One of the team’s big challenge was definitely losing key players, through graduation, exchange and injuries. But we’ve adapted so well as a team regardless.

2. Which team is your biggest rival this year?

Honestly, ourselves.

3. Was there anything different that you did as compared to last season?

Nothing much has changed compared to last season. More freshies, new faces to grow as players. Gaining experience from this year and contribute more for their years to come.

4. If you have to nominate a Male and Female MVP on your team, who would that be? Haha, we don’t really believe in a sole MVP. But if anything, Darryl and Yan Ching, the ones that played throughout.

5. What is the unique differential of your team? (What sets you apart from the other schools?)

We have no restrictions of setting a positional goal to reach. We come into this competition with a goal to just play our best and have fun as a team together.

6. And finally, what is the expected finish for SUniG 2019? (Position)

Like i said, we give our best every game and take each results as they go regardless of positioning.

Captain's Interview:
Singapore Management University

1. What is your team's biggest challenge coming into SUniG 2019?

One of our team’s biggest challenge was not having a coach, hence a few of our players have to take up the role of coaching, leading and playing.

2. Which team is your biggest rival this year?

SIT due to the past year games.

3. Was there anything different that you did as compared to last season?

Team dynamic and the emphasis of building the right . Just like every school, key players will graduate or go on exchange. Therefore, we always make the best out of whatever resources we have.

4. If you have to nominate a Male and Female MVP on your team, who would that be?

I would nominate Titus and Jamie, not only are they good players on-field, they have contributed tremendously off-field for the team. On behalf of our team, I would like to thank them for their contribution and commitment to the team. ❤

5. What is the unique differential of your team? (What sets you apart from the other schools?)

We are the under dogs.

Captain's Interview:
Singapore Institute of Management

1. What is your team's biggest challenge coming into SUniG 2019?

We had difficulty fitting individuals into the most suitable position, but we have been trying to adjust and adapt.

2. Which team is your biggest rival this year?

The biggest rival would be ourselves.

3. Was there anything different that you did as compared to last season?

In almost every school-based competition, be it Sunig or IVP, there are bound to be players graduating. but i guess the thing that is constant would be the spirit and hunger to outperform ourselves. recently, we were privileged to be given an opportunity to take part in an overseas tournament held in Qingdao, China. Our team managed to clinch the golden cookie but above all, i feel that the friendships forged during the trip is superior and it will be the driving factor for us which we lacked last season.

4. If you have to nominate a Male and Female MVP on your team, who would that be?

Male MVPs would be Bryan Yeo/Ben Ho and the Female MVP would be Caroline (Student Development Officer). Without them we would not be able to train so comfortably.

5. What is the unique differential of your team? (What sets you apart from the other schools?)

I can’t really compare with others schools because i’m not there personally to undergo their trainings, but i can say that our team is definitely more determined this year!

6. And finally, what is the expected finish for SUniG 2019? (Position)

To retain the title of course! but results aside, what matters most would be the team fighting for one another as they are already winner.
